Motivators and Demotivators

MOTIVATORS AND DEMOTOVATORS

Motivators:

What we really want to accomplish is self motivation, when people do things for their own reasons and not yours. That is lasting motivation.
The greatest motivator is belief. We have to inculcate in ourselves the belief that we are responsible for our actions and behavior. When people accept responsibility, everything improves: quality, productivity, relationships and team work.

We can motivate others with the help of few steps:

1)Give recognition
2)Give respect
3)Make work interesting
4)Be a good listener
5)Encourage goal setting
6)Provide opportunities for growth
7)Provide training
8)Throw a challenge
9)Help, but don’t do for others what they should do for themselves.

Demotivating factors:

Some of the reasons why people get demotivated at the initial stages are:

a)Unfair criticism
b)Negative criticism
c)Public humiliation
d)Rewarding the non-performers(which can be Demotivating for the performers)
e)Failure or fear of failure
f)Success(which leads to complacence)
g)Lack of direction
h)Lack of measurable objectives
i)Low self-esteem
j)Lack of priorities
k)Negative self- talk
l)Unfair treatment
m)Poor standards
n)Responsibility without authority.

A satisfied person is not necessarily a motivated person. Some people are satisfied with very little. In this case, satisfaction may lead to complacence. Motivation comes from excitement and excitement does not come until there is full commitment.
New methods of motivation will not work till the Demotivating factors are removed. Many times, just removing the Demotivating factors can spark motivation.

Purpose in life

Purpose in life

There are many kinds of desire- desire for success; desire to do one's duty even at the cost of pleasure; desire for purpose- something worth dying for which gives meaning to life.
What good is it if you gain the whole world and lose your conscience?

A purposeless life is a living death. What is your purpose? Do you have one? Purpose brings passion. Find or create a purpose and then pursue it with passion and perseverance.

Every day we need to ask ourselves: "Am I getting any closer to my purpose in life? Am I making this a better place to live?" If the answer is no, then we have just wasted a day of our life. Life will reward us in the proportion to our contribution.

The earlier we find a purpose in life, the better our life will be. The greatest challenge lies in the unending search for the purpose of life, not only as an individual but also for our family, organizations and country. Once our purpose and values are clear, conflicts between self interests and social obligations find a moral balance amongst themselves. We become aware of when to take stand. That is when we start making the right decisions for long term gain rather than making the wrong decisions for short-term gain. Wisdom and maturity lead to greater understanding of major issues.

We all should have a purpose or a goal in life. A purposeless person is like walking on an unknown road. We walk but we don't know where it will take us. Until we know where we are going and what we are doing, we are living a purposeless life. We shouldn't forget that we are given life to live and fulfill our purposes to gain happiness and satisfaction ultimately.

How do you see yourself at job? Are you one of those majorities who will settle for what they get and crib about their fortune and luck? Or do you want to be one of those who dream of changing the destiny of the world. Do you have the guts to pursue your dream? Do you have it in you?

Ultimately, if you go on to see, as a student, you are studying for a good career. Now, if the cause itself isn’t attractive enough, how will the effort be strong? If your destination is not desirable, why will the journey be fast?

An ambition motivates you to work harder. An ambition has magnetic effect- it attracts you to itself. Every day you can access untapped sources of energy and enthusiasm by thinking of your goal in life alone. And the most important thing is to hold the ambition consistently. If you can do that, you really are on an ambitious track. Thus, it’s very important that one knows what he wants and what he is doing.

Live in the present

Live in the present

Never leave till tomorrow, which you can do today.
-         Benjamin Franklin

Life is not a dress rehearsal. We have got only one shot at this game called life. The stakes are too high to waste your life. The stakes are the future generations.

What time is it and where are we? The answer is now and we are here. Let’s make best of now and utilize the present to the fullest. The message is not that we don’t need to plan for future. The message is that we need to plan for the future.

If you build a positive attitude, learn the phrase, “do it now” and stop the habit of procrastination. The saddest words in life are:

1) “It might have been”
     2) “I should have”
     3) “I could have”
     4) “I wish I had”
5) “If only I had given a little extra”

When people say, “I will do it one of these days”, you can be sure it means none of these days. Some people keep waiting for all the lights to turn green before they start. That is sad.
Stop procrastinating” isn’t it time that we put off putting things off?

Living the present moment is very important. We all should be adding life to days and not days to life. Each moment is valuable and we should not be wasting our time. There is a saying, "If you will waste time, time will also waste you." Living life to the fullest is the most important thing. Whatever has happened in the past, it cannot be retrieved. Once done, once gone is forever gone. And we even don't know what will happen in future. So, if we all live in present, enjoying every moment, then only we can be happy and satisfied.

When we enjoy the present, we enjoy our life. It is not possible that every day is a happy day. But we shouldn’t get discouraged with failures or shouldn’t feel defeated. We should be strong. To be a strong person, one should believe in oneself. If we believe, we can achieve. Having positive self esteem is very essential. We should be motivated ourselves to move on in life despite difficulties and live life to the fullest.

Belief in yourself

BELIEF IN YOURSELF

You are what you think you are.
But first ask yourself, what do you think you are? What are you capable of achieving? What are your highest limits and greatest potentials? If you are a seed how big is the tree of your achievements?

One of the very important traits of winners is that they believe that they can win. They create belief. Once a belief is created, subsequent experiences will be more or less fitting into the mould. These are called references – the stronger they are the stronger your beliefs are.

For example, in India, they tie an elephant with a rope. The elephant has enough strength to lift logs but still won’t break the rope to run free. Why? When the elephant was a baby the mahout first tied it to the rope. It tried and tried but didn’t succeed. So, it formed a belief that it was not possible to break the rope. It is very fascinating. But we all do the same thing.

Good Listening

GOOD LISTENING

What is good listening?

The process of listening can be divided into smaller segments for better understanding of the problem:

1) Sensing – pertains to hearing the message.
2) Interpreting – refers to understanding what has been heard.
3) Evaluating – means formatting an option of what has been said.
4) Remembering – refers to storage of the message for future use.
5) Responding – refers to acknowledging what has been said.

What hinders good listening?
a) Noise – affects hearing.
b)Boredom – makes what is being said unattractive.
c) Mental block – does not permit a person to accept a new idea.
d) Restlessness – encourages interruptions.
e) Fatigue – diminishes the listener’s concentration.

The ability to listen and understand the others viewpoint signifies intelligent behavior.

How can we become a good listener?

Listening effectively is an acquired skill and requires you to concentrate on what is being said. It also requires you refrain from speaking until the other person has finished delivering the message. Here are a few ways to become a good listener:

1) Establish eye contact with the speaker. When you look at the speaker, there is an unspoken assurance that you are listening.
2) Sit up with a straight back. It improves attentiveness.
3) Consider how the information being provided is useful to you.
4) It extraneous thoughts invade your mind, remind yourself that what is being said is important for you.
5) If it is a one- to- one session, confirm what has been conveyed to you by summarizing it up in your own words.
6) When part of a group to whom information is being imparted, nodding your head confirms you are listening. If necessary, confirm the information at the end of the session.
7)   When the information is important, make notes immediately after the session. It will help the information to be a part of your memory.

Most people are not good listeners. Lack of attention is a common cause for poor listening. Getting a complete message is important when listening. Confirming a message helps understand it better. A wandering mind results in poor listening. Listening effectively is an acquired skill. A good listener is a good learner.
